The Worst Thing That Happened to Software Development
Unpopular opinion: LLMs are the worst thing that has happened to software development, and we will all pay the price.
Not about vibe-coders
I’m not talking about “vibe-coders”. I don’t think that phenomenon deserves serious discussion.
I’m talking about people who use AI as a coding assistant, convinced they’re still in control of their architecture and design decisions. In reality, the LLM is making those decisions for you, while keeping you under the illusion of control.
You’re replacing yourself
LLMs won’t take your job. You’re taking your own job by being lazy. :)
In a couple of years, people who still know how to write proper code will be very rich and in demand. And I don’t mean complicated, data-critical systems. No, no. Just proper, good old object-oriented code.
What LLMs actually are
LLMs are not AGI, and they never will be.
They are excellent tools for function approximation and pattern recognition. They don’t think. They don’t reason. They don’t understand.
And no, coding was not solved with GPT models, it was not solved 3 years ago, it was not solved 1 year ago, it was not solved 6 months ago, it will not be solved in 6 months, not in 1 year and not even in 5. If coding was just about writing code we’d have sweatshops for writing code before LLMs and not developers getting paid 6-8 figures to do it. Use your brain and stop listening to people who hype LLMs BECAUSE THEY ARE MAKING MONEY OFF OF IT.
So use them, but use them right
LLMs are useful, just not in the way tech bros and token sellers portray them. Make use of them, and stop following the hype blindly.
